Jenna Blackwood

"Captain Jenna Blackwood, a fearless adventurer with a spirit as untamed as the open sea she calls home, is propelled by an unyielding thirst for exploration. With windswept hair and eyes alight with curiosity. At her side is her cherished compass, an ancient relic passed down through generations of seafaring women in her family. Believed to possess the power to unveil hidden truths and chart courses through both the physical and mystical realm."

This was the prompt given for my Illustration IV class that asked of us students to work with a prompt that simulated a gig out in the real world. For this project, I had to create both a character, and her compass. To start off, I created about 15 different silhouettes of a potential sea fairing character. Acting as a sort of art director, I consulted with my professor about which one would be the strongest.

After conversing with my professor about the strongest silhouette, I then drew on top of the shape creating a general sketch of what the character would look like. Including internal shapes and proportions.

With this resolved, I then took the opportunity to create a few different color comps to get an appealing Color combination. While I explored a few different schemes, I fell back often to reds and blues. Reds to represent her more adventurous and wild side, and blues to show freedom and her connection to the sea.

With the basics completed, It was time to wrap everything up together to create a turnaround. First, however I wanted to create a polished illustration of Jenna first as a way to base the turnaround off of the proportions. Once that was completed.

Once that was completed, I then used the illustration to create the front view, and from there was able to create a turn around while keeping on model.
